Lrikulau is a hunting dog of the Rukai and our best friend.
Our ancestor, Adriu, found a little Lrikulau weeping beside the body of its mother, who had been shot by an arrow fired by someone from another tribe. Adriu stroked the Lrikulau’s nape and said, “Don't be afraid! My little friend, from now on we belong to the same family.” play_arrowplay_arrowAdriu
Adriu was a gifted craftsman who made things the tribespeople used every day. That day, he was walking alone in the forest looking for wood to carve. Suddenly, he heard the sound of crying: “ayee, ayee, ayee…”
play_arrowplay_arrowFrom that day on, every time Adriu went out, the Lrikulau went with him, keeping pace quietly by his heel. Whenever his master had finished a piece of work, the Lrikulau would be very happy and yelp with delight as if to say, “That’s really beautiful, really beautiful!”

play_arrowplay_arrowThe Lrikulau imagined that these beautiful carvings could leap and dance, and he would bark loudly at Adriu to complain that his master had gone out without him. Adriu would laugh aloud and cuddle the Lrikulau, rolling in glee on the ground in play…

Another day they both went out looking for wood to carve. Adriu was climbing a tree when suddenly the glass beads round his neck came loose and they dropped down into a deep dark tarn. That was the fearsome Taulrisisiane, a forbidden place. To prevent some greater misfortune, he could not but get away as quickly as possible.

Adriu had changed. If ever Lrikulau came back from hunting and had not caught anything, he would see Adriu looked glum, just as he had when he lost his glass beads. Lrikulau thought, “Could it be because he lost those precious glass beads?” He jumped straight into the blackness. The cold dark water did not lessen his resolve as he swam down to the depths but…
