A Living Space
Proposal
Luoan Liao
Without warning, the pandemic broke out and disrupted people’s daily routine: activities were called off; public gatherings were banned. In a society that holds social engagements in high regard, what should people do after being deprived of social events? Subjectivity shall, though only being completed through social interactions with the surrounding world, be shaped primarily by oneself. While the world is bogged down by disasters and social interactions are interrupted, the subjectivity shaped by judgments of others collapses.
Imagine a future world in the post-pandemic era, when people build their own living space: a place where one can live in solitude calmly, where people keep a proper distance from each other, providing each other support with moderate intervention. In this place, people enjoy their private time and space, which grants them the opportunity to dig deep into their minds and transform their experience into the practice of creation. The more disastrous the world becomes, the more people should focus on self-growth and determination to achieve their goals – it is the only way to resist suffering from the outside.
